In the late 1970s, he held his first position in broadcasting as a reporter for Middlesbrough F.C. on Radio Tees. Prior to joining BBC Radio 2’s weekend sports show Sport on 2, he was a sports broadcaster on London’s LBC Radio Sportswatch program in the early 1980s.
Before moving to Sky in 1992 to provide coverage of horse racing, greyhound racing, snooker, and darts, he later spent time as a sports newsreader at TV-am, Channel 4, Eurosport, and British Satellite Broadcasting. He won The Weakest Link’s sports presenter special edition in 2003. Stelling was given the opportunity to host Score, the BBC’s new Saturday results programme, in 2004, but she declined the offer.

Stelling began presenting Sports Saturday in 1994, which later changed its name to Gillette Soccer Saturday in 1998. Stelling hosted a six-hour program featuring live reports on the afternoon’s football games and football discussion with a panel of analysts that included Frank McLintock, Chris Kamara, Rodney Marsh, and George Best.
He made the announcement that he would be departing the show at the conclusion of the football season in October 2021. Stelling would remain, at least through the 2022–23 season, it was announced in March 2022.
Between 2011 and 2015, Stelling presided over Sky’s live Champions League coverage in place of the departed Richard Keys. After 25 years as host, Stelling stepped down from Soccer Saturday at the end of the 2022–2023 campaign.
