Matt Gutman Biography

Matt Gutman is the Chief National Correspondent for ABC News. He is known for reporting on ABC news and platforms. Gutman was the host of the weekly TV series Sea Rescue which ended in September 2018. He is also the author of The Boys in the Cave: Deep Inside the Impossible Rescue in Thailand.

Over the past half-decade, he has been one of the most frequently put-up correspondents on “20/20.” Gutman’s tireless reporting helped the show win an Emmy for its documentary on the 2017 Las Vegas massacre and also the Christopher Award for its reporting on the Thai cave rescue. Gutman followed treacherous mission to save the 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in Thailand.

He was later subsequently authored “The Boys in the Cave,” which chronicled the heroics of a motley crew of cave diving misfits, the US Airforce, and Thai Navy Seals who spearheaded the rescue. Previously based in Miami, Gutman won awards for his coverage of the Trayvon Martin Shooting and the BP Oil spill.

Gutman hosted the ABC Television Network’s Saturday morning show, “Sea Rescue,” from 2013-2018  which won the 2016 Emmy for “Outstanding Children’s Series.” Before he joined ABC News in 2008 where Gutman started at ABC News Radio.

On January 2020, Gutman was suspended by ABC News for incorrectly reporting the death of Kobe Bryant in the 2020 Calabasas helicopter crash. All four of Bryant’s children had died when only Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna “Gigi” was onboard the helicopter and perished in the crash.

Gutman resumed reporting for ABC later that year and appeared on the October 23, 2020,  on the episode of 20/20 entitled “The Perfect Liar,” which he interviewed jailhouse informant Paul Skalnik and deathrow inmate James Dailey.
