The information about UNC was based on research done by learning specialist Mary Willingham, who worked there.
In a later announcement, UNC deemed this study to be “severely defective.” The NCAA also questioned Ganim’s representation of collegiate athletes’ academic backgrounds in the piece, claiming that “the cold, hard facts simply do not bear out the situation painted in reporting.” Willingham responded by stating that her “data is 100% correct.”
Unbiased expert studies that analyzed the data and refuted Willingham’s assertions were published by UNC on April 11, 2014, with the conclusion that “[a] recent CNN item stated, “60% [of UNC athletes] read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels. 8% to 10% of students read at a third-grade level or lower.” Only 6% of UNC student-athletes read at the 4th to 8th grade level, as opposed to 60% of all student-athletes at the university.”
The CNN piece was highlighted by a New York Times columnist in May 2014 when they discussed Willingham’s role as a whistleblower. As a result of the news, UNC requested a seventh investigation into the problem at UNC, which was overseen by former federal prosecutor Ken Wainstein and revealed that UNC had minimized an academic scandal there.
