In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, the University announced the departure of Eli Gold as the broadcaster of Alabama football, revealing that Chris Stewart will step in as the play-by-play commentator.
Stewart, renowned as the ‘Voice of Alabama Basketball,’ will maintain his basketball commentary duties in his new role. Having served in various capacities with the network since 1998, Stewart will take on both roles starting with the Golden Flake A-Day Spring Football Game.
Stewart, part of the Crimson Tide Sports Network since 1998, was appointed as the newest announcer for the Tide on Wednesday, taking over from longtime broadcaster Eli Gold. During the 2022 season, Gold’s absence due to battling esophageal cancer and other health issues led Stewart to assume the lead role in the radio booth. Upon Gold’s return last season, Stewart continued covering road games while Gold handled home games at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, a setup expected to continue into the upcoming season.
However, Wednesday brought a change. Now, Stewart embraces what he views as one of the premier positions in broadcasting.
“Frankly, while I’m eager to excel and uphold the standards of this role, I share the fans’ passion for the program,” Stewart remarked. “I honor it, but I’m not intimidated by it, because I genuinely love and will respect this role as it deserves.”
Stewart learned of his new role on Wednesday afternoon from CTSN general manager Jim Carabin, almost an hour prior to the official announcement.
“I am profoundly thankful that Jim and Greg (Byrne) at Alabama have entrusted me with this role,” Stewart expressed.
For Stewart, who used to host his own pretend broadcasts as a child, envisioning himself as the “voice of the Crimson Tide,” this job holds immense significance. It’s not just about the substantial platform it offers, but also about the journey from uncertainty just a few years ago to now.
