Bruce worked for a management consulting firm for a year after graduating from university, but found the experience depressingly dull. She then worked at various advertising agencies, including Boase Massimi Pollitt, where she met her future husband, a company director.
After working as an assistant producer on Panorama, she transitioned to reporting on Breakfast News in 1992. She then moved to BBC South East, where she worked as an occasional presenter and reporter on Newsroom South East and First Sight, a weekly current affairs programme.
She worked as a reporter for the BBC2 current affairs show Public Eye from 1994 to 1995. She then worked as a reporter for Panorama and Newsnight before taking over as host of Breakfast News and the BBC Six O’clock News in 1996.
Following Jill Dando’s murder, Bruce took over as co-presenter on Crimewatch alongside Nick Ross until both were replaced by Kirsty Young near the end of 2007. Bruce joined the BBC’s general election results programme as a presenter in 2001.
Following a court case in which British Airways requested that a Christian employee conceal her cross because it violated the airline’s dress code, the BBC revealed that it had some concerns about Bruce’s frequent wearing of a cross necklace, despite the fact that she was not prohibited from doing so.
Bruce became the BBC’s first full-time female host on Question Time on January 10, 2019, succeeding long-time host David Dimbleby. Her tenure as host was quickly marred by controversy, and Bruce stated in May 2020, “QT is without a doubt the hardest job I’ve ever done.”
