Nauert worked as a correspondent for First Business, a syndicated business program, in 1996. From 1998 to 2005, she was a correspondent for Fox News for four years after serving as a contributor for three years. She consistently contributed to The Big Story as a correspondent.
On weekday mornings, Nauert and co-anchor Steve Lacy co-anchored the newscasts Good Day Early Call and Good Day New York Wake Up for station WNYW in New York City, which is owned and operated by Fox Broadcasting Company.
Nauert left Good Day Wake Up in October 2012 to work as a newscaster for Fox & Friends. Nauert “broadcast just about every right-wing talking-point under the sun” while she worked as a Fox News broadcaster, according to the Washington Post.
Nauert’s appointment as the new spokesman for the State Department was announced by the US Department of State on April 24, 2017, marking her first official position.Five weeks later, on June 6, 2017, she conducted her first press conference in that capacity.
She was appointed acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs on March 13, 2018, replacing Steve Goldstein in the fourth-ranking position at the State Department.She was in charge of about a thousand workers and a $1.2 billion budget in that position.
Nauert expressed support for a Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen in April 2018. Additionally, she denounced “Iran’s malign influence” in Yemen. When the protests at the Gaza border began in May 2018, Nauert responded, “We oppose actions against Israel at the International Criminal Court (…) because it does not help the cause for peace.”
Nauert demanded the release of Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russia, including Volodymyr Balukh, Oleksandr Shumkov, Stanislav Klykh, and Oleg Sentsov.
