Knapp found himself in need of funds and a dose of “responsibility and perspective.” Initially aiming for a bartending role, he ended up spending eight months as a security guard at a restaurant doubling as a nightclub. Reflecting on his experience to the PGA Tour, he admitted feeling uncertain about his physical stature for the job but was willing to project a tough image.
His schedule was demanding, working Thursday through Saturday nights and handling special events. This allowed him to practice golf until late afternoon on Fridays, hit the gym, have dinner, then head straight to work until the early hours. The routine repeated itself, with him waking up at 10 a.m., hitting the course by 11, practicing until 5 p.m., and repeating the cycle.
Despite the challenging routine, Knapp was grateful that he didn’t solely rely on the security job for income. Instead, it funded his endeavors in the mini-tour circuit and the PGA Tour Canada during the summer. This experience instilled in him a stronger work ethic and a deeper appreciation for the game of golf, teaching him not to take his opportunities for granted.
