CNN’s chief national affairs correspondent is Zeleny. Prior to taking on that role in January 2021, he was the network’s senior Washington correspondent, covering the overall 2020 campaign, as well as the network’s senior White House correspondent, covering the Trump administration for all of the network’s programs and platforms, with a focus on President Trump’s main role in the 2018 midterm election campaign.
Zeleny covered the 2016 presidential campaign, which is his fifth, from the days of the Democratic and Republican eras through the general election contest between Trump and Hillary Clinton.
Zeleny joined CNN in 2015 after leaving ABC News as senior Washington correspondent. He covered the Obama administration and the Republican Party as they took control of the United States Senate in the 2014 midterm elections.
Prior to joining The New York Times, Zeleny was the Chicago Tribune’s national political correspondent, while there he covered the 2004 presidential campaign and the Bush administration’s first term.
He began his career with the Tribune in 2000 as a reporter on the Metropolitan desk in Chicago, where he was a member of the reporting team that won a Pulitzer Prize in explanatory journalism for exposing gridlock in the nation’s air traffic system.
Prior to joining ABC News, Zeleny was The New York Times’ national political correspondent. He covered the 2012 presidential election as well as Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Zeleny also served as a White House correspondent for the first two years of Obama’s presidency and previously covered Congress for the Times.
