She began her career as a legal affairs reporter for the CBC, covering stories from the Department of Justice and the Supreme Court of Canada. In the 1990s, she covered the Supreme Court of Canada as it set precedents with Charter of Rights rulings. Laura also reported from Parliament Hill on issues ranging from gun control to abortion to international trade.
Laura was based in Washington D.C. during and after the September 11, 2001 attacks. She was assigned to London for nine turbulent years of political upheaval and violent attacks blamed on terrorism. Laura also reported from Pakistan, where Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, Israel during its war with Lebanon and its ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, Saudi Arabia, where she was detained, Syria as the country descended into civil war, and Africa, where she reported undercover from Zimbabwe when western journalists were barred. She reported from far too many other countries and conflicts to name.
She went on to work as a foreign correspondent in Washington, D.C. and London, as well as reporting from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, and Syria, before returning to Canada as a national affairs reporter in Vancouver.
