LZ Granderson Biography

LZ Granderson is an American journalist, he is known for working at the Los Angeles Times as a sports and culture columnist. Before joining the newspaper he worked at ESPN The Magazine,  he also was  a co-host of SportsNation on ESPN, afternoon co-host at ESPN LA 710 and a columnist for CNN.

Before joining ESPN and Page 2, Granderson was a sportswriter at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a columnist at The Grand Rapids Press. He co-hosted the talk show pilot Joan Rivers’ Straight Talk. Granderson’s writings for Page 2 typically center on the social and human aspects of sports. He writes about his own personal struggles, the lives of athletes, and occasionally provides social commentary. In June 2015, he joined ABC News as a contributor in a variety of segments.

Based on remarks from a speech given by rock star Ted Nugent, Granderson penned an opinion piece titled “Ted Nugent should be in jail” for the online CNN website on April 18, 2012, accusing Nugent of endangering the life of US President Barack Obama.

Granderson wrote a divisive opinion piece titled “Don’t be nosy about Fast and Furious” for CNN’s website on June 27, 2012, criticizing Americans for being overly interested in how their government operates, praising disgraced Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North for “taking one for the team” in the Iran-Contra scandal, and advocating that illegal actions committed by government officials in the name of protecting the public be kept secret from the general public.

He defended Jason Collins’ 2013 announcement that he was the first openly homosexual male professional athlete in a major North American sport. Collins is an NBA center. Granderson made his ESPN debut on the Around the Horn program on January 28, 2016, losing to Jackie MacMullan in the “Showdown” part of the broadcast.

Granderson was appointed the Los Angeles Times’ Sports and Culture Columnist in January 2019. He was given this role specifically so that he could represent the “sectionality of sports and society  politics and culture.”
