Online Gaming Does it Pay

The main ways to make money from gaming are becoming a professional eSports player and winning competitions, developing games, or streaming. Streaming, however, relies more on personality than gaming skills, as most streamers prioritize entertainment over mastery of the games they play.

It requires repeatedly playing the same section of a game (which you may not even enjoy) until you can make it break. Then, you must create a highly detailed bug report explaining how to reproduce the issue so developers can fix it. Once they do, you’ll have to go through the process again to confirm the fix before the bug can be signed off.

The only way to make money playing games is either become a professional gamer and join an eSports team then start winning competitions, become a developer or become a streamer which is more about personality than gaming as most streamers are generally bad at the games they play, they do it for entertainment

It involves playing the same part of the same game (that you don’t much like anyway) over and over until you can get it to break, and then producing a bug report that describes in excruciating detail how to reproduce the bug so that the developers can find and fix it. After that, you get to do it all over again to verify that it’s been fixed so that the bug can be signed off.

I once got an offer from a video game company to do a contract for QA/UAT testing for their games. So, it’s definitely possible. You may have to present skills you have for the following, if possible:

•Basic knowledge of test cases in tech.

•Some knowledge of Unity or Unreal engine.

•Some experience in media or technology; background in product may help, too.

•Schedule flexibility.

A lot of these jobs don’t offer high paying salaries or hourly pay rates, but it’s a good way to get your foot in the door to work in the gaming industry. It could be through a staffing agency who has a relationship with gaming companies, or a contract based role through the actual company. It could expose you to other roles typically available such as character animating, software engineering, product management, texturing, rigging, etc.

Companies such as Epic Games near the Raleigh area have these types of roles. I’ve also seen some similar role at Ubisoft, as well.

Some video gaming companies have a big presence in Raleigh, Durham, Cary (NC); Texas; California, and Seattle, I believe.
