Mark Willacy Biography
Mark Willacy is a well-known Australian journalist, he works for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Six other lesser Walkley awards have been bestowed upon him, as well as two Queensland Clarion Awards for Queensland Journalist of the Year. He is the author of three books.

From 2002 until 2006, Willacy worked as a Middle East correspondent headquartered in Jerusalem. He covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and spent 93 days in and around Iraq with cameraman Louie Eroglu reporting on the 2003 Iraq war. He spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, and Hamas political leader Khaled Meshaal during his assignment.
He was a North Asia region correspondent located in Tokyo from 2008 to 2013, when he covered the 2011 Thoku earthquake and tsunami, as well as the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear tragedy. He also covered the Korean Peninsula, where he had an exclusive interview with former North Korean spy Kim Hyon-hui, who is responsible for the bombing of Korean Air Flight 858, in 2013.
His debut book, The View From the Valley of Hell, was published by Pan Macmillan in 2007 and chronicled his experiences covering the Middle East conflict. Willacy’s second book, Fukushima: Japan’s Tsunami and the Inside Story of the Nuclear Meltdowns, was published in 2013 and is about the 2011 Tsunami earthquake and tsunami disaster. Fukushima was on the long list for the Walkley Book Award in 2013.
Rogue Forces, Willacy’s third book, was released in August 2021 by Simon and Schuster. The book, which is self-described as an insider account of suspected unlawful executions and cover-ups by SAS patrols, exposes alleged Australian Special Forces war crimes in Afghanistan. It was released shortly after the official Brereton Report, which looked into these and other charges leveled by Australian personnel in Afghanistan, which was released in 2020. At the 2022 New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards, it was nominated for the Douglas Stewart Prize for Nonfiction.
Willacy has won the Australian Walkley Award for Journalism seven times. This includes recognition for coverage of the 2003 Iraq War, the 2011 Tsunami and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan, Australian environmental contamination in 2015 , a Four Corners report on the Tham Luang cave rescue, and an investigation into local government corruption with producer Alexandra Blucher.
He was named Queensland Clarion Awards Journalist of the Year in 2010 for his research into the Philippines’ Mindanao slaughter, and again in 2019 for his Four Corners investigation into minors being held in adult watchhouses.

Mark Willacy Afghanistan
Some allegations of war crimes in Afghanistan involving Australian special forces reported by Willacy and ABC Investigations in 2012 were disputed by Heston Russell, the then commander of the allegedly responsible soldiers from the 2nd Commando Regiment’s ‘November Platoon,’ and criticized by Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton.
On November 19, 2021, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation issued a statement backing Willacy and defending the accuracy and severity of his reporting. A 25-year-old guy was charged in December 2021 with menacing Willacy because of his reporting on the subject.
