Alexander Wolff is an American writer for Sports Illustrated, he is also known as the former owner of the Vermont Frost Heaves of the Premier Basketball League. He has written several books about basketball, among them being Big Game, Small World, and a look at basketball around the world.

Wolff is a former owner of the Vermont Frost Heaves of the Premier Basketball League and a writer for Sports Illustrated (PBL).
He is the author of several basketball publications, including Big Game, Small World, a look at basketball around the world. His most well-known and infamous piece was “Why the University of Miami Should Drop Football,” published in Sports Illustrated on June 12, 1995.
Wolff said in an open letter to then-University of Miami president Edward T. Foote II that the Hurricanes were a “disease” that had destroyed the school’s image and that they needed to be shut down at least temporarily.
Following the Nevin Shapiro booster scandal, Wolff wrote a follow-up letter to then-current UM president Donna Shalala in 2011. Wolff’s memoir of his father and grandparents, as well as reflections from his year in Berlin, Endpapers: A Family Story of Books, War, Escape, and Home, was published in 2021.
He worked for Sports Illustrated for 36 years, retiring in 2016 as the magazine’s longest-serving writer. Wolff covered the Olympics, soccer’s World Cup, the World Series, every Grand Slam tennis tournament, and the Tour de France, in addition to basketball at all levels. SI story assignments took me to China, Cuba, and Iran, and covered topics like race, ethnicity, gender, drugs, the environment, education, youth development, business, armed conflict, and ethics, as well as cultural themes like art, style, food, and the media at the intersection of sport and society.
Three of his essays for Sports Illustrated were published in The Best American Sports Writing. Wolff collaborated on Team of Broken Dreams, an Emmy-nominated documentary short about the impact of the Yugoslav crisis on basketball players from the Balkans, with Hoop Dreams directors Steve James and Peter Gilbert in 1996. The film won the International Olympic Committee’s Media Award after being broadcast on NBC and based on one of my SI articles.
