Ali Velshi Wiki
Velshi began his professional reporting career with CFTO as a General Assignment reporter. He went on to work as a business reporter and anchor for CablePulse 24 and its sister station CityTV. He began working for Report on Business Television, Canada’s first all-business news specialty channel, in 1999. The Business News, Canada’s first prime-time business news hour, was hosted by Velshi.
He moved to the United States in September 2001 to work for the business news channel CNNfn in New York City. Before the network shut down in December 2004, he co-hosted The Money Gang with Pat Kiernan and anchored several shows, including Insights, Business Unusual, Street Sweep, and Your Money. Reassigned to CNN’s main network, he remained a business anchor and reporter, initially assigned to CNN’s early-morning show Daybreak.
Velshi was a regular substitute anchor for CNN/US shows like American Morning. On Saturday and Sunday, he co-hosted the business show Your Money. Velshi also hosted CNN’s Energy Hunt in 2008, which took him to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Canadian Oil Sands. Tragic events in 2008 gave Velshi more airtime, including reporting from the now-destroyed Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan, after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. During Hurricanes Gustav and Ike coverage, Velshi appeared on air from hurricane-ravaged areas as the storms hit.
Velshi announced his departure from CNN on April 4, 2013, to join Al Jazeera America to host a weekly 30-minute magazine-style prime-time program called Real Money with Ali Velshi. He was the new channel’s first on-air personality to be hired. The channel stated that it hoped Velshi’s show would begin as a weekly show and progress to a daily show by the end of the year. Real Money with Ali Velshi premiered as a daily weekday show on August 20, 2013. The show relaunched as Ali Velshi on Target on May 12, 2015.
He joined MSNBC in October 2016, with additional responsibilities at MSNBC’s parent company, NBC News, where he serves as Business Correspondent. Velshi co-anchored the 1:00 PM ET MSNBC news show Velshi & Ruhle with Stephanie Ruhle, as well as his own 3:00 PM ET news show MSNBC Live with Ali Velshi. Velshi was also named as the Friday edition’s fill-in host of The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.
However, Velshi was moved to weekend mornings in December 2019 with his own show called simply Velshi, a 2-hour solo act. In the weekday evening lineups, he continues to fill in for other hosts.
