After an April 2017 piece by Watkins reported interactions between Russian operatives and Donald Trump policy adviser Carter Page, who had not been publicly identified in relation to those contacts and was working for the CIA at the time of the meetings, the FBI launched an investigation into Wolfe. Wolfe pleaded guilty to one count of lying to the FBI about his contact with Watkins on October 15, 2018.
Wolfe allegedly leaked information to Watkins and three other reporters, according to prosecutors. Wolfe never gave Watkins classified material, according to Watkins.
