When Gregg “Opie” Hughes hosted an O. J. Simpson song parody contest on his Nighttime Attitude show on Long Island radio station WBAB, Cumia first got to know him.
He and Joe made the decision to enter the competition, and they recorded a song under the name Rotgut called “Gonna Electric Shock OJ” to the tune of Otis Redding’s “The Dock of the Bay.” Hughes found the song to be popular and played it on his show numerous times before inviting the Cumias into the studio to sing it live in September 1994.
Shortly after, Cumia started producing comic segments for Hughes and the station’s morning show in addition to his installation work. Early in 1995, Hughes and Cumia made the decision to start their own radio show. Hughes created an air check and distributed it to various stations.
Opie and Anthony was first broadcast in March 1995 after Hughes and Cumia accepted an invitation to anchor afternoons at WAAF in Boston, Massachusetts. Cumia first believed that entering the radio industry would result in his earning a very nice income, but later said that his pay at WAAF was just above the rate of doing physical labor.
For an April Fool’s Day hoax that had listeners believing Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was killed in a car accident while carrying a young female prostitute from Haiti, the two were dismissed in April 1998.
The Anthony Cumia Show debuted the week after Cumia was fired from SiriusXM in July 2014. He initially was “petrified” about the show’s potential success and lacked the courage to make it a full-time profession, but he hired staff to assist get the show up and running in a month.
The Anthony Cumia Network was the original name of his subscription-based network Compound Media, via which the program debuted on August 4, 2014, from 4-6 pm, Monday through Thursday.
