Fantano’s work as a music director at the campus radio station of Southern Connecticut State University began in the middle of the 2000s.[8] Fantano began his employment with Connecticut Public Radio (WNPR) in 2007 and hosted The Needle Drop.
He started The Needle Drop in the same year as written reviews, then in January 2009, he began posting his series of video reviews on the corresponding YouTube channel, beginning with a Jay Reatard album.
In order to comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Fantano erased previous reviews that included audio snippets in 2010. He was working on The Needle Drop at the student radio station and a pizza place at the same time. He made the decision to pursue The Needle Drop full-time in late 2011, but he remained associated with WNPR until 2014.
The Needle Drop won the “Beyond the Blog” category of the 2011 O Music Awards. In 2014, Nick Veronin of Wired wrote about Fantano: “Fantano depends on gestures, squeezing his fists or contorting his elastic, expressive face, instead of using ten-dollar words to explain a riff or synth tone.
