In 1994, Banfield took home two Iris Awards for Best News Documentary and Best of Festival.

During her time at CICT-TV, Banfield worked as a contract associate producer for ABC’s World News Tonight. She covered the summits between Bush and Gorbachev in 1991 and Clinton and Yeltsin in Vancouver in April 1993.

Additionally, Banfield was in charge of educating the public about what transpired during the Jodi Arias trial and the George Zimmerman trial, shedding light on the challenging legal proceedings in each case.

Banfield covered Good Morning America, 20/20, World News with Diane Sawyer, and Nightline as an ABC News correspondent. Prior to joining ABC, Banfield served as the anchor and host of three shows on TruTV (formerly Court TV), including the daily legal news program Banfield and Ford: Courtside, the weekly evening program Hollywood Heat, and the popular prime time special series Disorder in the Court, which she also created and co-produced. She was nominated Outstanding Anchor by the Gracie Allen Awards in 2008 in honor of her work at Court TV. From 2000 through 2004, Banfield covered The Today Show, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, and Dateline as a correspondent for NBC News. Banfield won an Emmy Award for her coverage of the September 11 terrorist events while reporting live from the World Trade Center in New York City. Banfield left Ground Zero after spending eight days in a row there in order to start covering the War on Terror in Islamabad, Pakistan.

She reported live from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, England, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Saudi Arabia between September 2001 and January 2004. Banfield and his colleagues received a National Headliner Award for their efforts.

She also served as the host of a number of MSNBC prime-time programs during this time, including Ashleigh Banfield: On Location and A Region In Conflict. The conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, the strife in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, and the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart in Salt Lake City were among the breaking news topics she covered while hosting these programs LIVE from various locations around the world. She also covered the 2000 presidential election, the Sydney Olympic Games, the Concorde crash in France, and the 2000 presidential election.

Banfield previously worked as the evening news anchor for KDFW-TV, the Dallas FOX station. On December 29, the host of HLN’s Crime & Justice and her three-year partner Chris Haynor exchanged vows at the Hermitage Club ski resort in Wilmington, Vermont. Most of the 50 guests were shocked to learn they were attending a wedding instead of Banfield’s 50th birthday party.

She allegedly went away to change into her gown without anyone noticing, according to Banfield. The wedding march started playing that evening at five o’clock local time. Banfield descended the lodge’s sweeping staircase with her two sons by her side.
