Bryant Gumbel Biography

Bryant Gumbel is an American journalist and sportscaster he is known for working at NBC Today for 15 years. He is also the younger brother of  Greg Gumbel whose also a sportscaster.

He graduated from Bates College in 1970 with a degree in Russian history.

He joined Black Sports as editor in 1971 and left the following year. In October 1972, he began his television career as a sportscaster for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles.

In the fall of 1975, Gumbel was hired by NBC Sports to co-host the National Football League pre-game show GrandStand with Jack Buck. He hosted numerous sporting events for NBC, including Major League Baseball, college basketball, and the National Football League, from 1975 until January 1982 . He returned to sportscasting for NBC in 1988, hosting prime-time coverage of the Seoul Summer Olympics and the PGA Tour in 1990.

NBC announced in June 1981 that Tom Brokaw would leave Today to co-anchor NBC Nightly News with Roger Mudd beginning in the spring of 1982.

During the summer of 1981, when Brokaw was on vacation, the candidates auditioned for his position. Gumbel was a last-minute replacement for Today co-anchor Jane Pauley in August 1981, and he became a candidate for the job by chance. He impressed executive producer Steve Friedman and other NBC executives so much that he quickly rose to the top of the Today anchor race.

Gumbel left Today after 15 years to host a new prime-time newsmagazine called Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel during the 1997-1998 television season. In 1998, the episode “The Reckoning” received a Peabody Award. It only lasted one season before being canceled.

Gumbel moved to CBS after leaving Today and Dateline NBC in 1997, where he hosted various shows before becoming co-host of the network’s morning show The Early Show on November 1, 1999. On May 17, 2002, Gumbel left The Early Show.

Bryant Gumbel began hosting REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL, HBO Sports’ monthly magazine-style program that explores issues, controversies, and personalities in the world of sports, in April 1995.

REAL SPORTS has received 29 Sports Emmy® Awards and three duPont-Columbia University Awards for broadcast journalism since its inception. REAL SPORTS was honored with a prestigious George F. Peabody Award for enterprising reporting in 2012 and again in 2016 by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication in May 2013.
