Daly began his broadcasting career at San Jose, California’s KOME radio station. Daly was then assigned to KOME’s sister station KROQ in Los Angeles, where he would work from 6 to 10 p.m. During Daly’s stint at KROQ, MTV approached him about being a VJ for “Motel California,” MTV’s summer beach house programming.

MTV hired Daly as a permanent VJ towards the end of the summer of 1997, requiring him to relocate to New York.  Daly began presenting MTV Live after arriving in New York. Daly began his career in broadcasting at the radio station. From 1998 until 2003, Daly hosted MTV’s TRL.  TRL arose from two Daly-hosted shows, “Total Request” and “MTV Live.”

As presenter of the famous live show, Daly was responsible for introducing the top ten videos of the day as well as interviewing celebrity guests.  Last Call with Carson Daly premiered in 2002. Until 2005, when it moved to Los Angeles, the show was shot on the same set as Saturday Night Live.
