Sapani made her film debut in Danny Boyle’s Trance. August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and Radio Golf, Errol John’s Caribbean classic Moon on a Rainbow Shawl, and The National Theatre’s staging of Euripides’ Medea are just a few of his theater credits. He also played drug lord Michael Kong in the 2013 Indian action flick Singam II.
In 2021, he appeared in a streaming rendition of Lolita Chakrabarti’s Hymn from London’s Almeida Theatre opposite Adrian Lester. Their performances have been regarded as “captivating,” with “delicately picking up the intricacies of two individuals who are both complete and damaged.”
His television roles include Judge John Deed in the Doctor Who episode “A Good Man Goes to War.” as Colonel Manton, as well as cameo appearances on Misfits, Ultimate Force, and Blackout. Sapani plays Sembene in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful for the first two seasons. Sapani will join the cast of the BBC America and AMC series Killing Eve, according to Deadline on August 19, 2019.
Sapani made his TV debut in The Bill in 1992, and since then has appeared in a number of supporting roles in shows such as Casualty, Holby City, Judge John Deed, Ultimate Force, Little Britain, and Doctor Who. Sapani was cast in smaller roles in the Misfits cast in 2009, playing Tony Morecombe, a probation officer who has enhanced superhuman power after the storm.
With Misfits gaining such a large following, Sapani was cast in a lead part on The Bastard Executioner as Berber the Moor, as well as a recurring role as Sembene on the cult-hit Penny Dreadful, where he appeared in 18 episodes until his fan-favorite character met an unfortunate death.
He has acted in a variety of short and feature films, including The Oxford Murders, Anansi, and Danny Boyle’s Trance, and is a well-known face in the film business. Sapani most recently appears in Star Wars: The Last Jedi as a medical frigate captain and Black Panther as a border tribe elder.
