2009 saw Myeni’s initial appointment to the board of directors of South African Airway. Following the simultaneous resignations of eight of the board’s fourteen members, including the then-chairwoman of the organization, Cheryl Carolus, she was named chairperson of the board in 2012. In 2012–2013, she ousted Vuyisile Kona, the airline’s acting chief executive, following allegations that Myeni had set up the security service to spy on him.
Six non-executive directors of the state-owned South African Airways expressed their “serious discontent” with Myeni’s leadership in a letter to Malusi Gigaba, the then-minister for Public Enterprises, in January 2014. In March 2014, after paying for documents that allegedly revealed Myeni had foreign bank accounts worth €18.5 million, the new chief executive, Monwabisi Kalawe, accused Myeni of corruption.
When it was discovered that these documents were false, Kalawe was subject to disciplinary action. Myeni accused Kalawe of significant governance violations in May 2014. Kalawe denied the allegations, leading Gigaba to declare his “complete confidence” in Kalawe after Gigaba urged the state-owned airline to address its long-standing management issues.
As part of its turnaround strategy, South African Airways and Airbus signed a lease agreement in March 2015 for five Airbus A330s. Without consulting SAA executives, Myeni informed Airbus in October 2015 that the airline would be renegotiating the contract to become an outright sale to an unidentified third party who would buy the aircraft on SAA’s behalf. This prompted a provision in the original deal that any renegotiation of the arrangement would need to be approved by the Ministry of Finance, raising fears about corruption bypassing the usual procurement procedure.
