After his retirement from professional football, Lineker pursued a career in the media, first on BBC Radio 5 Live and then as a football pundit. From 1995 to 2003, he was a team captain on the sports game show They Think It’s All Over.
In 1999, he succeeded Lynam as the BBC’s football anchorman, including the flagship football television show Match of the Day, becoming BBC Sport’s highest paid presenter. Following the departure of Steve Rider from the BBC in 2005, Lineker, a keen recreational golfer with a handicap of four, became the corporation’s new golf presenter.
Lineker resigned as a columnist for The Mail on Sunday in May 2010 in protest of the sting operation against Lord Triesman, which reportedly jeopardized England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
Triesman resigned as chairman of both the bid and the FA on May 16, 2010, following the release of a secret recording of a conversation between the peer and a former ministerial aide in which he claimed that Spain and Russia planned to bribe referees at the World Cup in South Africa.
Lineker then began working as an anchor for Al Jazeera Sport’s English-language football coverage, which is broadcast throughout most of the Middle East. In 2012, he left the Qatar-based network.
