In 1977, as an 18-year-old amateur, McEnroe won the mixed doubles at the French Open with Mary Carillo and then advanced through the Wimbledon qualifying event and into the main draw, where he was defeated in four sets by Jimmy Connors in the semifinals. He won the NCAA singles title and helped the Stanford team to an NCAA triumph in 1978.
He joined the ATP tour later that year and earned his first professional endorsement deal with Sergio Tacchini.McEnroe and partner Peter Fleming won the Wimbledon Doubles title in 1979, followed by a victory in the US Open Doubles the following year. McEnroe won the men’s singles title in the US Open the following week, his first Grand Slam singles title.
McEnroe’s finest season was 1984 when he went 82–3 in matches, which is still the highest single-season victory rate in the Open Era. He set a career-high with 13 singles titles, including Wimbledon and the US Open, and finished the year as the world’s number one player. He was also a member of the winning World Team Cup and runner-up Davis Cup teams for the United States.
He started the year on a 42-match winning streak, winning his first six tournaments and reaching the final of the French Open for the first time. In 1978, McEnroe won two singles rubbers in the final as the United States defeated Great Britain to win the Cup for the first time since 1972. McEnroe was a key member of the United States Davis Cup teams for the next 14 years, winning the tournament in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1992. He set numerous Davis Cup records for the United States. In 13 series, he competed in both singles and doubles, and he and Peter Fleming won 14 of the 15 Davis Cup doubles matches they played together.
Ivan Lendl defeated him three times in Grand Slam competitions, including straight-set quarterfinals at the 1987 US Open and 1989 Australian Open, and a two-day four-set battle in the fourth round of the 1988 French Open. During his second sabbatical, rumors of drug misuse began to circulate. McEnroe denied them at the time but admitted to using cocaine during his career in a 2000 interview.
