Orr joined KYW-TV as chief meteorologist in January 2003, making her debut on the same night as Marc Howard, who had previously worked as an anchor on WPVI, the ABC O&O in Philadelphia. She had previously worked as a weekend meteorologist at WCAU-TV.
When John Bolaris departed WCAU, she was apparently offered the position of chief meteorologist, but she declined because she received a better wage offer from KYW-TV for the same position. Glenn Schwartz eventually accepted the job offer at WCAU.
Orr is credited with coming up with the term “Live Mega Doppler 3” for their radar shortly after arriving at the station. She was also the first to create a summer series that focused on the Jersey Shore. “Orr at the Shore” broadcast on Thursdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day for almost a decade.
In August 2011, it was revealed that Orr would only be handling the 10 p.m. weather on the CW Philly 57 and the 11 p.m. weather on CBS3 due to a desire to spend more time with her family. At 5 and 6 p.m., morning meteorologist Kate Bilo took up Orr’s spot.
When new management took place at CBS3, she was fired along with sports director Beasley Reece in July 2015. Orr revealed on 94.1 WIP radio on September 13, 2015 that she would be returning to FOX 29 full-time, doing afternoon and evening shows at 5, 6, 10, and 11 p.m.
Kathy’s career highlights include broadcasting live from the cockpit of a hurricane hunter aircraft during Hurricane Ivan in 2004; serving as the official meteorologist of the Philadelphia Eagles and broadcasting live from the 2005 Super Bowl and the 2008 World Series; and serving as the official meteorologist of the Philadelphia Eagles.
For CBS Radio, XM Radio, ESPN Radio, and Sports Illustrated.com, she has delivered weather updates and commentary. Kathy was honored by the Governor’s Office of New Jersey in 2003 for her “Orr at the Shore” series of summer stories that raised environmental awareness along the Jersey Shore.
