Jonathan Capehart, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, has been a member of The Washington Post editorial board since 2007. He writes about politics and social issues, hosts the podcast “Capehart” (formerly “Cape Up”), and hosts the weekly Washington Post Live show “First Look,” which can also be seen on “The Choice MSNBC” on Comcast’s Peacock streaming service. Capehart also contributes to MSNBC and hosts “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart.”
In 2021, his MSNBC special “A Promised Land: a Conversation with Barack Obama” received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding News Discussion & Analysis.
Capehart appears on PBS as a commentator on “The PBS NewsHour” and in the popular Friday segment “Brooks and Capehart.” Capehart moderates panels at the Aspen Ideas Festival, the Aspen Institute, the Center for American Progress, the Atlantic Dialogues conference, and the German Marshall Fund’s Brussels Forum.
He has also served as a moderator at the Atlantic’s Washington Ideas Forum and the Connecticut Forum. Capehart was the New York Daily News’ deputy editorial page editor from 2002 to 2004, and she was a member of the paper’s editorial board from 1993 to 2000.
His 16-month editorial campaign to save Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater earned him and the board the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing in 1999. Capehart left the Daily News in July 2000 to become the national affairs columnist at Bloomberg News, where he remained until February 2001, when he left to serve as a policy adviser to Michael Bloomberg in his first successful campaign for mayor of New York.
