At 13, Martin joined The Young and the Useless, a comedy troupe. Starting at The Second City, they worked as a box office employee and stand-up comedian. At 16, Martin became the youngest Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award nominee. In Canada, Martin wrote for Baroness von Sketch Show, winning the Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing twice.
In 2011, Martin moved to London, gaining recognition for Mae Martin: Us at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This inspired the BBC Radio 4 series Mae Martin’s Guide to 21st Century Sexuality. They co-hosted GrownUpLand and featured on The Now Show.
Dope, premiered in 2017, explores addiction, referencing both drugs and dopamine. Co-created with Joe Hampson, Feel Good (2020) addresses relationships, queerness, addiction, and privilege. The Guardian hailed it as “immaculately written” and “properly funny.” The second season premiered in 2021.
