Reston is a national political correspondent for The Washington Post who focuses on Western politics and the 2024 presidential election. After covering politics and five presidential elections for CNN, the Los Angeles Times, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and the Austin American-Statesman, she joined The Post in 2023.
She worked for CNN for seven years, covering the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections as well as the midterm elections for audiences on television and online. Her reporting on politics in the western half of the country included an original digital video series called “MaeveWest” that examined some of the particular issues the area faced, such as immigration and the drought, as well as the evolving politics of Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado. Maeve worked as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times for seven years until she started working for CNN in 2014.
Before focusing on local, state, and federal politics and covering Republican Mitt Romney’s White House campaign and GOP Sen. John McCain’s comeback in the 2008 presidential election, she covered policing, courts, and wildfires in the Inland Empire during her first year at the Times.
For the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Maeve also reported on the 2004 presidential election from Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. She covered education and the Texas Legislature in her first reporting position at the Austin American-Statesman.
