Peter Bergen Biography

Peter Bergen is an American journalist, and author, he currently serves as CNN’s national security analyst. Bergen is also the Vice President of New America. He is known for producing the first interview with Osama Bin Laden which aired in 1997.

Bergen has testified before congressional committees on topics including as Afghanistan, Pakistan, al Qaeda, drones, ISIS, and other national security concerns. He serves on the editorial board of Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, the top academic publication in the subject.

He contributes to Foreign Policy as an editor and writes a weekly column for CNN in addition to being a member of the Aspen Institute’s Homeland Security Group. He has worked as a professor at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies as well as Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Osama bin Laden’s first broadcast interview, in which the al Qaeda leader for the first time declared war on the United States in front of a Western audience, was produced by Bergen in 1997 for CNN. In 1994, Bergen earned the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for “Kingdom of Cocaine,” a CNN documentary that was also nominated for an Emmy.

Bergen worked as a CNN correspondent and producer from 1998 to 1999. From 1997 to 1998, he served as the program editor for CNN Impact, a CNN and Time collaboration. He formerly worked as a producer for CNN, producing a wide range of US and foreign stories. He worked in New York for ABC News from 1985 to 1990. He originally visited Pakistan in 1983 along with two friends for the purpose of filming a documentary about Afghan refugees fleeing the Soviet invasion. “Refugees of Faith,” the ensuing documentary, aired on Channel 4 in the UK.
