As the weekend and 5:00 p.m. weather anchor when he first joined Eyewitness News in 1988, Champion soon rose to become the primary weather anchor for the 5:00, 6:00, and 11:00 p.m. newscasts. Sam worked as a weekend anchor and news reporter at WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky, prior to joining WABC-TV.
He obtained a bachelor’s degree in broadcast news from Eastern Kentucky University before starting his career as an intern at WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.
Sam started working as a weather reporter for Good Morning America in 2006. In addition to overseeing all weather, climate, and environmental coverage and programming across all ABC platforms, he also developed ABC News’ Weather, Climate, and Environment Unit.
He was appointed managing editor of the Weather Channel in 2012, where he established and presented the 4-hour morning program AMHQ as well as the primetime climate and science interview program 23.5.
Sam has earned four Emmys and a Peabody Award for his “Sandy Coverage”. In 2019, Sam returned to WABC after taking the weather anchor position for Eyewitness News This Morning.
