In the southwest, Gables has a long tradition of working in journalism. At KWCH in Wichita, Kansas, where she reported news and hosted a station public affairs program, she began her career in broadcasting.

Later, she worked as a news producer, reporter, and anchor for KWTV in Oklahoma City, where she covered US military matters affecting Tinker Air Force Base (she served as a United States Army Reservist for seven years). She was the news director for radio station KVSP in Oklahoma City.

Shon joined WDIV in Detroit where she covered local news as a reporter and morning anchor. She worked as the spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society’s Southwest Michigan Division while she lived in Detroit, which inspired her to create a two-hour breast cancer awareness special.

The Republican National Convention, the Summer Olympics bid, the reopening of the Statue of Liberty, the Twin Towers Memorial, the NYC Transit strike, and the 2003 blackout were just a few of the notable stories and community events that Gables covered while anchoring local news on WCBS morning broadcasts from 2003 to 2006.

Throughout her broadcasting career, Gables, an Emmy-nominated journalist, has also hosted a number of televised specials. “Salute to NYC Schools: Truman High School and the Tunnels to Towers Run” was especially dear to her heart. Gables served as the program’s host and took part in the run to remember the New York firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

While living in New York, she also created and hosted the television program “Salute to Harlem,” which focused on the neighborhood’s history, present, and future. Shon later became the host of “Black Enterprise Business Report,” a nationally syndicated program from Black Enterprise Magazine. At the time, it was the only business news and executive lifestyle program on television that was exclusively targeted at African-Americans, and it had a reach of 80% in more than 211 markets.

She conducted interviews with prominent news figures for the BET show, including Texas-based Bishop T.D. Jakes, President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Time Warner Chairman Richard Parsons, and BET co-founder Shelia Johnson.

In addition to being nominated for an Emmy and winning the 2017 Louisiana Broadcasters Prestige Award for best election coverage, Shon has also received several awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, including the Lee Evans Outstanding Journalist Award. In 2003, the Harlem Chamber of Commerce presented Shon with the New York City Excellence in Media Award.

Gables also won the Gracie Award from American Women in Radio and Television, the National Black Achiever in Industry Award, and a spot on Network Journal’s list of the 40 Under 40 Black Achievers. Shon was a board member at an all-boys school called Eagle Academy.
