Travers Mackel is an American journalist, she is currently working as a news anchor at WDSU. He appears on News at 4 and 5 PM Monday through Friday. Mackel joined the station in 2003.

He is, a multiple regional Emmy award winner, was named “Louisiana Newsperson Of The Year” by The Associated Press in 2016 and “Reporter Of The Year” in Louisiana by the same organization in 2014.

He has either won or been a part of WDSU’s winning submissions for four regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, and in 2018, he was a member of the WDSU News team that received the National Murrow Award.

Travers has also received the Society of Professional Journalists’ prestigious Sigma Delta Chi Award twice. One for WDSU’s coverage of the Hubig’s Pies fire in the Marigny in 2012, and another for WDSU’s documentary commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in 2015.

He’s also the recipient of a National Headliner Award, which is one of the oldest and largest annual national awards recognizing journalistic excellence. Travers and WDSU were honored for their spot news coverage. Travers’ investigative reporting was cited as a key component in WDSU receiving the national Walter Cronkite Award for excellence in political journalism in 2015.

Travers has extensive coverage of high-profile public corruption cases and criminal trials.He was the station’s point person for former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin’s federal corruption trial, and he was the only television reporter to secure an on-camera interview with the former mayor since he was indicted, convicted, and jailed.

He also covered former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard’s federal corruption case and the murder trial of the man convicted of shooting and killing former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith.

Travers has appeared on CNN and MSNBC numerous times, including appearances on “The Rachel Maddow Show.” He appeared as himself in an episode of the HBO series “Treme” shot in New Orleans, as well as as a reporter in the New Orleans-shot film “This Is The End.”

Travers’ most important story of her career was covering Hurricane Katrina in the summer of 2005. He was one of only a few journalists who rode out the storm in the Louisiana Superdome, providing live, firsthand reports as sections of the roof were ripped off. Travers was also on a police boat, telling viewers about rescue efforts in New Orleans hours after the levees broke, when much of the city was under water.

Travers previously worked as an anchor and reporter for KTVE-TV in Monroe, La., and spent nearly three years reporting for WLBT-TV in Jackson, Miss. Travers attended Loyola University in New Orleans. In college, he was a shortstop for the Loyola baseball team. Travers has received nearly a dozen awards from the Press Club of New Orleans and The Associated Press of Louisiana since Hurricane Katrina hit the area in 2005.
