He was a co-producer for WHUT-TV in Washington and a producer for Radio11 WBAL in Baltimore. He also worked for WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, Maryland, and WPMT-TV in York, Pennsylvania.
Blackwell has covered numerous breaking news incidents as an on-the-ground anchor and reporter, including CNN’s Emmy-nominated coverage of the simultaneous shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, as well as the destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. Additionally, he was crucial in the network’s coverage of the demonstrations that took place after George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks died in 2020.
Blackwell also covered the deaths of Georgia teenager Kendrick Johnson (2013), Hurricanes Harvey and Irma (2017), the massacre at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando (2016), riots in his hometown of Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray (2015), and other events.
