Boulton began his career at the BBC and IPS News. He was a journalist in the parliamentary lobby before to joining Sky News. At the time, he worked for TV-am as political editor alongside Kay Burley, who eventually joined Sky News.

For the 1989 debut of Sky News, Boulton was tasked with creating the political team. Thus began his lengthy employment as the news channel’s political editor.
Boulton was chosen as the 2007 chairman of the parliamentary lobby and received the Royal Television Society’s highest Judge’s Award. On June 15, 2008, he made history by interviewing US President George W. Bush and his wife Laura on British television for the first time.
On May 10, 2010, while covering events surrounding the general election, Boulton lost his composure and defended his impartiality in a live on-air interview with former 10 Downing Street Director of Communications Alastair Campbell after Campbell accused Boulton of political bias in favor of the Conservatives. Before the 2014 Scottish independence vote, Boulton resigned from his position as political editor of Sky News to become its Editor-at-large. He had covered five general elections throughout his 25 years as political editor. When Faisal Islam resigned to join the BBC in 2019, Beth Rigby took over as his replacement in the position.
Boulton stated on November 10th, 2021, that he will be departing Sky News at the end of the year. It appears that the direction Sky News plans to take over the next few years is not one that’s a very good fit for me, he said in an interview with The Times.
