Interviews with the duo are rare, however their background was explored in an exclusive 2014 interview with Grantland: David, who was born in Newark, New Jersey, and reared in Paterson, New Jersey, is the son of filmmaker Rick Friedberg. Seltzer is from a family of Canadian shoe salespeople from Mississauga, Ontario.
Seltzer and David met at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and became friends because of their shared passion for movies, particularly comedies. Both of them are Jewish. They didn’t go to film school, with Seltzer majoring in art history and Friedberg in history, but after taking a Martin Scorsese class in their last semester, they decided to pursue a career in the industry.
Both spent their days working to pay for their college, selling homemade T-shirts, creating their own food delivery service, and opening shoe stores in Los Angeles, while writing screenplays at night. Rick Friedberg exhibited his son’s script for a spy film spoof when he created the comedy teaching video Bad Golf Made Easier with Leslie Nielsen. Spy Hard was born as a result of Nielsen’s approval.
David and Seltzer then worked as screenwriters for hire for a few years, selling “upwards of 40 scripts,” according to Seltzer. The lone completed project was an uncredited rewrite for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1996 feature Maximum Risk, while an unproduced Liberace biopic brought them to future collaborator and producer Peter Safran. David and Seltzer’s horror film spoof spec script Scream If You Know What I Did Last Halloween was sold to Miramax’s Dimension Films division in 1998.
Shawn and Marlon Wayans devised a similar proposal with Buddy Johnson and Phil Beauman, and because to a WGA decision, all six writers were credited on what became Scary Movie, despite David and Seltzer not actually writing it.
