The fateful meeting between Seltzer and David occurred at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where a shared fervor for movies, particularly comedies, cemented their friendship. Both belonging to the Jewish heritage, they defied the conventional trajectory by forgoing film school. Seltzer pursued art history, while Friedberg delved into history. However, a transformative Martin Scorsese class in their final semester ignited their shared aspiration for a career in the film industry.
During their university days, necessity compelled them to work various jobs to fund their education, from selling homemade T-shirts to establishing a food delivery service and even venturing into shoe stores in Los Angeles. Their nights, however, were dedicated to crafting screenplays. Rick Friedberg, David’s father, played a pivotal role by presenting his son’s spy film spoof script in the comedy teaching video “Bad Golf Made Easier” with Leslie Nielsen. This collaboration led to the inception of “Spy Hard,” approved by Nielsen.
Transitioning into the industry, the duo navigated a path as screenwriters for hire, churning out an impressive tally of “upwards of 40 scripts,” as revealed by Seltzer. Notably, an uncredited rewrite for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1996 feature “Maximum Risk” marked one of their completed projects. The encounter with future collaborator and producer Peter Safran transpired through an unproduced Liberace biopic.
The trajectory took an intriguing turn when their horror film spoof spec script, “Scream If You Know What I Did Last Halloween,” found a home at Miramax’s Dimension Films division in 1998. However, a twist of fate intervened when Shawn and Marlon Wayans, along with Buddy Johnson and Phil Beauman, presented a parallel proposal. Due to a Writers Guild of America (WGA) decision, all six writers received credit on what would later become “Scary Movie,” although David and Seltzer were not the actual authors of the script.
