Elliott Wilson Biography

Elliott Wilson is a well-known American journalist, television producer, and magazine editor. He is the CEO of Rap Radar. He was previously the editor-in-chief of XXL Magazine. Wilson became known for his editorials under the moniker “YN” when he was there.

Since 1992, when he became the music editor for Beat-Down Newspaper, Wilson has been writing and speaking about hip hop and rap music. “Book of Rap Lists” and “Big Book of Racism!” are two of his critically recognized works. Both works were inspired by the short-lived publication Ego trip.

The ego trip collective was designated one of the “25 Funniest People in America” by Entertainment Weekly in 2004. Wilson has contributed to GQ, VIBE, and Rolling Stone, among other magazines.

Wilson joined College Music Journal as a beat-box editor in the spring of 1996. He was appointed as music editor of The Source magazine at the conclusion of that year. Wilson joined Harris Publications as editor-in-chief of XXL Magazine in September 1999, and in 2005, he developed their website, XXLmag.com. Hip-Hop Soul was also co-created by him. Wilson was a co-executive producer of VH1’s TV show Illest Minority Moments: Presented by ego trip in 2004.

He co-executive produced three VH1 specials in 2005, “Race-O-Rama: Blackaphobia, In Race We Lust, and Dude Where’s My Ghetto Pass?” as part of the Ego trip. Wilson worked as co-executive producer of VH1’s eight-episode series Ego trip’s The (White) Rapper Show, which premiered in January 2007. Wilson worked as co-executive producer of Ego trip’s Miss Rap Supreme, which premiered on VH1 in April 2008. Wilson was named editor-in-chief of RESPECT. in 2010.

Wilson’s time at XXL magazine came to an end in January 2008 amid controversy. He established RapRadar.com, a website that monitors popular hip-hop and rap culture in real time, alongside Paul Rosenberg on March 9, 2009. Rap Radar was nominated for the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2010, 2011, and 2012 for best hip-hop online site. Wilson took over as editor of RESPECT. magazine in 2010.

Wilson began hosting “Keep It Thoro,” a two-hour weekly show on East Village Radio, in 2012. Wilson hosts the show, which includes new music as well as talks with today’s most prominent and relevant musicians. Keep It Thoro has been EVR’s top overall show since the summer of 2012.

Wilson was included on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Top 20 Music Industry Innovators” list in 2011. Elliott was named to Billboard’s “Twitter 140” in 2011 and 2012, a list of the music industry’s most influential personalities. Wilson was named one of six “Hip-hop Culture MVPs” by MTV in 2011. He’s been a guest expert on ABC, CNN, MTV, MTV2, VH1, and BET, among other networks.
