Margot Williams Wiki

Williams worked as the Library Director at the Poughkeepsie Journal early in her media career. Williams joined the Washington Post in 1990.  Williams was a regular contributor to the “Networkings” section at the time.

Williams joined the New York Times in 2004. Williams pushed the disclosure of a searchable database of 16,000 pages of papers created by the Office for the Administrative Review of Detained Enemy Combatants while at the New York Times.

On November 3, 2008, The New York Times published its “Guantanamo Dockets.” The dockets are based on the personal notes Williams began keeping when she reviewed all 16,000 pages pertaining to Guantanamo Bay detainees. Williams departed The New York Times in 2010 to work as a correspondent for National Public Radio.

The Intercept’s Research Editor for Investigations is Williams. Her investigative reporting experience includes stints at the Washington Post, New York Times, NPR, and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. She has followed the money (and private jets) of mayors, governors, senators, presidential candidates, and ex-presidents, as well as jihadis on the internet and detainees who died in US immigration detention.

She has also investigated Iraq war contractors and followed the money (and private jets) of mayors, governors, senators, and ex-presidents. Over the years, she’s shared her passion for investigative journalism — as well as her extraordinary ferreting skills — at a number of worldwide workshops.

She worked for the Washington Post for 14 years, and was a member of two Pulitzer Prize-winning teams: one in 1998 for an investigation of D.C. police shootings of citizens, and another in 2001 for national coverage of terrorism. She researched the network of jets and shell businesses involved in the transit of terrorism suspects around hidden jails throughout the world for the Washington Post and later the New York Times in the aftermath of 9/11.

Years before their names were made public, she assembled the first list of Guantánamo inmates and built the Times’ comprehensive Guantánamo database. She worked for NPR and the New York Times in 2011 analyzing the Guantánamo documents leaked by Chelsea Manning.
