Gutierrez was part of the NBC News team that received an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award after a powerful tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma, in 2013. He reported on the Republican field during the 2016 presidential campaign. He also went to Mexico to report on the capture of “El Chapo,” one of the world’s most notorious drug lords.
He was one of the first reporters on the scene of the deadliest mass shooting in American history, the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Fla., and has written extensively about police-involved shootings across the country, including those in Dallas, Baton Rouge, La., and Charlotte, N.C. He’s also covered terrorist attacks in Paris, Brussels, and London, as well as reporting live from Havana on the changing US-Cuba relationship.
Gutierrez joined NBC News from KHOU-TV in Houston, where he worked as a City Hall reporter. He was previously a weekend morning anchor and Emmy-winning reporter at WJRT-TV in Flint, Michigan. His first on-air job was at WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, West Virginia, an NBC affiliate. Gutierrez interned at Telemundo in South Florida and ABC NewsOne in Chicago while in college.
Gutierrez, who is originally from Miami, graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism with a double major in political science and journalism. He belongs to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists as well as the Investigative Reporters and Editors.
