Gilma Avalos is an American journalist, she is known as a news anchor for  NBC 4 New York. Before joining KTVT, Avalos worked at NBC 6/WTVJ-TV in Miami as a multimedia journalist and general assignment reporter.

Avalos’ reporting was a key component of NBC 4 New York’s award-winning COVID-19 coverage, which received the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award in January 2021 for “creat(ing) a 360 view in real time of the coronavirus pandemic, with courageous and thorough reporting on the virus’s explosion in New York City.” The duPont has long been regarded as the broadcast, documentary, and online equivalent of Columbia University’s Pulitzer Prize.

Since joining WNBC in 2019, Avalos has covered several of the Tri-most State’s important issues, including the COVID-19 epidemic. After five years at KTVT, a CBS-owned station in Dallas/Fort Worth, where she hosted weekday afternoon newscasts and provided breaking news coverage, she joined NBC’s flagship station.

Avalos was on the site of the horrific ambush of five Dallas police officers in 2016, and was among the first to report on the police robot that assisted in the arrest of the culprit. She also reported on the Amber Guyger trial, anchoring live coverage of the judgment and punishment.

Prior to joining KTVT, Avalos worked at NBC 6/WTVJ-TV in Miami as a multimedia journalist and general assignment reporter. She was one of the first reporters in South Florida to cover Trayvon Martin’s shooting murder, and she then traveled to Sanford, Florida to cover George Zimmerman’s trial.

She began her professional career as an anchor at News 12 The Bronx, where she covered Hurricane Irene in 2011. She also assisted in the development of the pilot that would eventually become News 12 en Espaol.

Avalos grew up in Miami, where she acquired English as a second language. She was born in El Salvador and reared there. She began her career in television when she was 12 years old, hosting “Paleokids,” a Discovery Channel Latin America children’s program about dinosaurs in Spanish.
