James Bennet Wiki

Bennet worked as an intern for The News & Observer and The New Republic to start his career in journalism. He worked as an editor at The Washington Monthly from 1989 to 1991. The New York Times hired him in 1991. He worked his way up to become the Jerusalem Bureau Chief and a White House correspondent.

In late 2006, Bennett was slated to start working as the Times’ reporter in Beijing. In March of that year, he left the publication to accept job offer as The Atlantic’s fourteenth editor-in-chief. After thorough selection procedure, David G. Bradley, the magazine’s publisher, chose Bennet. Bradley met with 80 journalists from different parts of the country.

The New York Times declared Bennet’s selection as editorial page editor, beginning on May 2, 2016, in March 2016. Bret Stephens, an op-ed columnist for the Times, was instantly added by Bennett to the editorial page after his debut column cast doubt on the long-term effects of climate change and led to rumors of subscription cancellations.

Sen. Tom Cotton wrote an opinion piece titled “Send in the Troops” for The New York Times on June 3, 2020, during a time of widespread demonstrations and riots against racism and police brutality following the death of George Floyd. Cotton advocated for the sending of federal troops into major American cities in the event of violent rioting. The editorial board was openly condemned by a large number of Times employees for publishing the op-ed, which detractors claimed normalized deadly rhetoric.

Bennet was appointed a “visiting senior editor” for The Economist on January 26, 2021, for a period of one year. He was the first American to write The Economist’s Lexington column, which was named for the location of the first American Revolutionary War battle, in July 2022 while serving as a senior editor at the publication.
