D’Arby started presenting while still a RADA acting student. She hosted CBBC from 1994 to 1997, SMART from 1996 to 1998, and her own show, Josie, debuted on Channel 5 in 1999. She hosted several well-known shows, such as the Bigger Breakfast and Top of the Pops.
Her first notable dramatic acting job was in the BBC drama Merseybeat as series regular WPC Jodie Finn. She began playing Peally Maghti, one of the hosts of the BBC’s award-winning parody of 1980s science show Look Around You, in February 2005.
As a co-host of The Steve Wright Show for BBC Radio 2 and as a presenter of several documentaries for BBC Radio 4, she has also worked in radio. She also hosted the BBC Radio 3 live version of The Choir, and she hosted the BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year final in 2017.
She has performed on the stage in addition to her varied career in television and the arts. The Newport Monologues, a play she wrote and directed in 2012 about life in her hometown, premiered in September to ecstatic press and audience praise.
D’Arby received recognition from the Royal Television Society for her work as the host of Inside Out, a current affairs program for BBC West. Along with Petroc Trelawny, d’Arby served as co-host of the Eurovision Young Musicians 2018 final on August 23 at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh.
