Santiago was the first journalist to broadcast live from Sanibel Island during Hurricane Ian coverage in Florida. Her reports shed light on the hurricane’s aftermath and gave voice to the devastated low-income communities.
Santiago joined CNN’s political team in 2020 to report from the campaign trail. She covered Congressman Beto O’Rourke’s and Senator Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaigns, capturing the campaigns’ courtship of voters while focusing on the issues that mattered most to communities across the country.
Santiago spent nearly a month traveling through Mexico with a caravan of migrants who were thrust into the national spotlight after President Trump tweeted about the group in April of 2018. Santiago introduced viewers to the caravan’s families and discussed the complexities of US immigration laws.
She also won the prestigious Alfred I. DuPont Award for the documentary “The Journey Alone,” which focused on the 2014 surge of unaccompanied minors from Central America and Mexico crossing the United States’ southern border.
