Novak Djokovic Career

In 2003, Djokovic began his professional career, at the age of 20, he won his first Grand Slam victory at the 2008 Australian Open, breaking Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s 11-major winning streak. By 2010, Djokovic had separated himself from the rest of the men’s tennis field, joining Federer and Nadal in the Big Three, a trio of players who have dominated the sport for more than a decade.

Djokovic was ranked No. 1 for the first time in 2011 after winning three of the four majors and a season-high five Masters events. For the rest of the decade, he was the best player in men’s tennis, leading the tour in major and Master’s titles and won four of his five ATP Finals titles in a row from 2012 to 2015. Djokovic finished No. 1 for six years and No. 2 for three years after four straight year-end finishes at No. 3 from 2010 to 2015.

Djokovic’s parents gave him a mini-racket and a soft foam ball when he was a toddler, which his father stated it became “the most adored item in his life.” Djokovic began playing tennis at the age of four, when his parents enrolled him in a tennis camp in Novi Sad, despite the fact that none of his parents had ever played tennis.

Before starting primary school, the six-year-old was sent to a tennis camp at Mount Kopaonik, where Djokovic’s parents owned a fast-food restaurant and a sports equipment store, organized by the Teniski Klub Partizan and overseen by Yugoslav tennis player Jelena Geni. When she saw Djokovic as a child playing tennis, she said, “This is the best talent I’ve ever seen.”

Over the next six years, Geni worked with young Djokovic before deciding that, given his quick development, traveling abroad in quest of a higher level of competition was the best choice for his future. To that purpose, she contacted Nikola Pili, and the 12-year-old traveled to the Pili tennis academy in Oberschleißheim, Germany, in September 1999, where he spent four years.

He began his international career when he was 14 years old, winning European championships in singles, doubles, and team play. Djokovic, a Monte Carlo resident, was trained by former Slovak tennis player Marián Vajda from 2006 until December 2013, when Boris Becker took over as his main coach.

Djokovic joined the ATP Tour in 2003, around the time that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal had established themselves as the two most powerful players in men’s tennis. He primarily competed in Futures and Challenger tournaments at the start of his professional career, winning three of each kind between 2003 and 2005. In 2004, he played in his first tour-level tournament, Umag, where he lost in the round of 32 against Filippo Volandri.
