Salama was the Associated Press’ Baghdad bureau chief before moving to Washington, covering the rise and fall of the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, as well as Iran’s growing influence in the region.
She also visited camps across the Middle East to report on the refugee and IDP crisis caused by the violence. The experience inspired Salama to write The Long Journey Home, a children’s book about an innocent Syrian boy forced to flee his home due to the war.
