While earning her master’s degree at Northwestern University, Lane started her career in television by working as a reporter for KSNT in Topeka, Kansas, based in Washington, D.C. She returned to her native New York after completing her studies and worked as an anchor and reporter for Cablevision-owned News 12 the Bronx.
After being hired as a reporter for Fox affiliate WSVN in 2000, Lane relocated to Miami. She spent two years working for NBC-owned WTVJ, a rival station, before going to Philadelphia and working for CBS-owned KYW-TV in September 2003.
Following her time at KYW-TV, Lane relocated to Los Angeles in July 2009. On August 18, she was hired by NBC affiliate KNBC. On August 29, she made her television debut in the weekend evening anchor seat, taking Kim Baldonado’s place.
Lane joined KNBC’s Today in LA as co-anchor in February 2010. Lane won a National Edward R. Murrow Award for Writing in 2011 for a special report on the enigmatic condition known as “Angelman Syndrome.” She also received two Golden Mic Awards and many Emmy Awards from KNBC.
On December 16, 2007, in the wee hours of the morning, Lane was taken into custody in New York City on suspicion of physically and verbally attacking a female police officer as well as making homophobic remarks and referring to the officer as a “fucking dyke.” One felony count of assault on a police officer was brought against Lane.
In response to her assault on a New York police officer, Lane was placed on administrative leave from KYW-TV on January 7, 2008, the station reported.
