David Leonhardt is an American journalist and columnist, he is known for working at The New York Times as a senior writer.

He has been employed by The Times since 1999; prior to that, he worked as a staff writer for The Times Magazine, co-hosted the “The Argument” podcast, was the founding editor of The Upshot section, and served as the Washington bureau chief and an Op-Ed columnist. He oversaw a strategy team that assisted Times management in defining the newsroom’s digital future.
He was a member of a Times reporting group whose investigation into corporate abuses was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2003. For his “Obamanomics” essay in the New York Times Magazine, he received the Gerald Loeb Award for magazine writing in 2009. For his columns in The New York Times in 2009 and 2007, he was the “Best in Business Journalism Contest” winner from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.
Leonhardt was chosen to lead the Times’ Washington bureau on July 22, 2011. On September 6, 2011, he started in that editorial position. On July 26, 2011, he released “Lessons from the Malaise,” which he described as his final Economic Scene piece.
