In Barcelona, Spain, in 1998, Calderon was given the chance to play professional volleyball, but he chose to complete his degree instead. The post of assistant coach for the women’s volleyball team at Long Beach State University was made available to him. He did it for five years; initially, he did it for free for three years, and then he was compensated for two more. In 2004, he started playing volleyball professionally, rising to the top of the Association of Volleyball Professionals’ national rankings.
Calderon’s father passed away in 2005, just before the chance to compete on Survivor, and this gave him the freedom to express his feelings freely because he never had a strong relationship with his father. He was having brunch with some pals when a CBS recruitment coordinator approached him about appearing on the show. Calderon began as one of five members of the Hispanic “Aitutaki” tribe on Survivor: Cook Islands (2006).
When Calderon joined the cast of The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency in 2007, he started his modeling career. In the opening episode of Season 2, Calderon attended an open casting call and stated that he has long wanted to be a model. He claimed that while the procedure and Dickinson were enjoyable, the models were forced to give up their modesty and spend the entire time naked and in their underwear. In episode 2, he received a callback and was subsequently hired by the agency.
In the third episode, Calderon received a request to be on the cover of Instinct magazine, a publication that only uses openly homosexual men as its male cover models. He had been “in and around gay people and nightlife,” but he had not come out to the media about his sexuality. He had been gay since high school, and he had even held a bartending position in a gay pub. He declined invitations to conduct interviews with gay periodicals like Instinct as well as allegations that he was gay.
