Wallace was involved in the recount of the Florida election in 2000.

Wallace worked as a special assistant to the President and director of media affairs at the White House during George W. Bush’s first term, where she handled regional press strategy and outreach. Wallace joined Bush’s 2004 presidential campaign as its communications director in 2003, where she “delivered her political barbs without snarling,” according to The New York Times.

Bush appointed Wallace as White House Communications Director on January 5, 2005. Wallace’s aims were defined in the New York Times piece announcing her presidential appointment as “to mend the tense relationship between a secretive White House and the press,” with the heading “New Aide Aims to Defrost the Press Room.”

Former colleagues characterize Wallace as “extremely convincing in the halls of the West Wing,” according to The Washington Post. It’s Classified, Wallace’s sequel to Eighteen Acres, was published in September 2011 and is about a fake presidential campaign plagued by a mentally ill vice presidential candidate. Wallace said her experience as a senior adviser to the McCain/Palin campaign inspired the notion. Madam President, her third novel, was published in April 2015.
