Omar Sachedina Biography

Omar Sachedina is a well-known Canadian journalist, he is the National Affairs Correspondent. His work has appeared in the Vancouver Sun, The Province, the Toronto Star,  and Mail, and CBC Radio. He began working for Citytv in July 2006, where he worked on newscasts for both CityNews and CP24 until 2008.

Sachedina started as a correspondent for CTV NATIONAL NEWS in Toronto in 2009, then transferred to the Ottawa News Bureau in 2013 before taking on his present post in 2019.

Sachedina reported frequently from Parliament Hill and the National Capital Region for CTV’s Parliamentary Bureau, and accompanied the Prime Minister to international summits and conferences. He also filled in on CTV News Channel’s daily political show POWER PLAY as a fill-in host. Sachedina was a member of CTV News’ Federal Election team in 2015 and 2019. She covered the campaign trail from coast to coast.

In 2019, Sachedina reported from the Colombia-Venezuela border on the Venezuelan political power struggle between Nicolas Maduro and Juan Guaido, as well as the network’s Canadian Screen Award-winning coverage of D-75th Day’s Anniversary in Normandy, France, and the Pro-Democracy Protest in Hong Kong.

He was nominated for Best National News Reporter at the 2020 Canadian Screen Awards for his exceptional coverage, and he was a member of the CTV News team that won the 2020 RTDNA Canada Ron Laidlaw Award for continued coverage of Canada’s opioid crisis.

Sachedina was nominated for a Daily Excellence award by the Canadian Association of Journalists for his coverage of the 2018 Indonesian earthquake and tsunami. Sachedina traveled through the famed Northwest Passage in August 2017 aboard a former Canadian icebreaker, where he filed television reports and blog articles from the electronically connected vessel.

An hour-long program for CTV’s W5 chronicled the journey. In July 2017, he had a private meeting with Governor Stephen Poloz of the Bank of Canada to discuss the decision to raise interest rates for the first time in nearly seven years.

Sachedina was also a member of the CTV News crew covering the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where he interviewed Governor General David Johnston and presented a story about a Canadian teacher who opened a music school in a favela. The RTDNA presented Sachedina and his cameraman and editor, Marc d’Amours, with an Edward R. Murrow Award for their work on this story.

The November 2017 church tragedy in Texas and the January 2017 mosque attack in Québec City were among Sachedina’s breaking news assignments. He also covered the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, the Boston Marathon Bombings, and the mass murder of 77 people at a youth camp in Norway.
