Phil Mattingly is an American journalist, he is currently working at CNN as a white house correspondent. Before he joined the network Phil worked at Bloomberg as a national correspondent. He then came to join CNN in 2015 as a New York-based correspondent.

Mattingly is CNN’s senior White House correspondent, covering the administration of Vice President Joe Biden. He worked as a congressional correspondent before taking on the White House beat in January 2021. Mattingly was one of the lead reporters contributing to CNN’s extensive coverage of the Republican efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare, the Capitol Hill spending and shutdown battles, and each step of the process to overhaul the United States’ tax system. As part of that effort, he was able to secure an exclusive interview with Speaker Paul Ryan on the details of the Republican tax bill on the day it was released.
He joined CNN as a New York-based correspondent in December 2015 and spent 2016 on the campaign trail covering Republican presidential candidates Chris Christie, John Kasich, and Donald Trump, including a series of investigative pieces into Trump’s business history, finances, and taxes.
Mattingly previously worked at Bloomberg Television in Washington, where he most recently served as a national political correspondent and before that as the network’s White House correspondent. Mattingly covered all of the major presidential candidates in that capacity, as well as the Obama administration’s domestic and foreign policy actions.
In the aftermath of the Edward Snowden revelations, he secured the first interview with then-Attorney General Eric Holder, and he landed a series of exclusive interviews with top cabinet, administration, and congressional officials throughout his tenure. Mattingly broke news on several aspects of the administration’s foreign, economic, and legal policy while covering the White House, and he was a finalist for the Scripps Howard Distinguished Service to the First Amendment award for an investigation into the Obama administration’s crackdown on government whistleblowers.
Mattingly worked as a print reporter for Bloomberg News in Washington before joining Bloomberg Television. Mattingly is an award-winning journalist who has covered Congress, economic and financial policy, the Justice Department, and Washington’s lobbying industry.
He was a key figure in Bloomberg News’ coverage of the federal response to the financial crisis, as well as the subsequent legislative, lobbying, and legal battles. He received a Society of American Business Editors and Writers award for breaking news in that capacity. His work has appeared in the Washington Post, Boston Globe, New York Times, New York Post, and Chicago Tribune, among other publications. During his time at Bloomberg, he was a regular contributor to Bloomberg Businessweek magazine.
